School Council Meetings

Upcoming School Council Meeting: Wednesday, November 29, at 7:00 p.m.

It’s #GivingTuesday today, and we wanted to share two ways you can help support the Roden community over the next week if you’re able.

1. We are raising money to purchase grocery gift cards for families in our community who need a little extra support heading into the winter break. You can make a donation through SchoolCashOnline (click on “Make a Donation” then select “Roden Public School” and “School Council Fundraising” in the two drop-down menus). We have set a fundraising goal of $2,000 for this initiative, which will be running until December 8.

2. Participate in our Toonie for Toys toy drive by sending your kid(s) to school in their PJs with $2 to donate this Friday. You can also send an e-transfer to RSC@roden.ca. Every dollar will be matched by @theswagsisterstoystore, and money will be used to purchase toys and books for local families.

Even a small amount helps. Thank you for your continued generosity.

Our third annual “Toonie for Toys” toy drive with @theswagsisterstoystore is back! This Friday, December 1, send your child(ren) to school in their PJs with a toonie. Swag Sisters’ will be matching every dollar raised to buy toys and books for kids in the community. Don’t have cash or have the capacity to give a little extra? E-transfer to RSC@roden.ca. This year we have set a fundraising goal of $1,000, which equates to $2,000 in toys. We are accepting donations until December 8, and looking forward to seeing the kids in their cozies this Friday. #itsgivingseason🤗

Some recent examples of what school council has purchased with the money we’ve raised:

1. Some ear-cancelling headphones for Ms. Halminen’s class. Roden has an open-concept floor plan, and these will help decrease sensory inputs and foster improved concentration.

2. New filament for the 3D printer on the 3rd floor. Students in grades 6 to 8 are learning to design and print their own items. They started this year with keychains. Mr. Lam has reported that using this device and software has increased students’ interest in science and engineering.

More purchases are on their way to the school and we will showcase these when they are unboxed. Teachers can request items from school council at any time via a Google Form and we do our best to fulfill these wishes. Thank YOU for helping to make these purchases possible!

Have your kids registered for the Move-a-Thon Fundraiser? Cornerstone Studio is joining forces with The Wright Spot and Locus Kids to raise awareness, non-perishable food items, and monetary donations to support folks in our community who face food insecurity. This number is growing daily — 1 in 10 Torontonians make use of food banks. This event is a great way to help, and money raised will go toward Roden/Equinox Food Programs. We’re so appreciative that our kids are the beneficiaries of some of the funds raised. Our popular breakfast, lunch, and snack programs are enjoyed by all students at the school. ❤️

Email info@cornerstonestudio.ca for the registration link. To participate, kids will pledge to raise $50, then spend 2 hours on the afternoon of November 26 moving and grooving (to a live DJ!). There are a ton of amazing prizes for them to win and it is a great way for kids to experience helping their fellow community members and giving back. Bonus: this is a drop-off event — there will be a ton of caregivers on site to watch the kids. (A nice opportunity for grown-ups to take a beat and maybe enjoy a coffee or brunch nearby).

We hope to see you there. Please share widely!

Double-post Friday! Next week is the school book fair in partnership with @ellaminnowbooks. Come by the school to browse during pickup and drop-off, or shop online — 20% of purchases will be credited back to the school to help fund school and classroom libraries. Students will be given a chance to visit the book fair and write wish lists during their library time and we will be making teacher wish lists available next week if you’d like to buy a book for your child’s class. We hope to see you there! 📚 🙌🏽
