International Language Instruction at Roden

The Toronto District School Board offers language classes at elementary schools across the city. This year, Roden P.S. is hosting Cantonese classes on Mondays from 3:35 to 6:05 for students of all ages. The cost is $20 for the year; simply fill out the registration form and bring it to the next class. Right now the class has 18 participants, and 23 are required to keep the class going – we encourage anyone who is interested to attend.

As well, Spanish classes may be offered at Roden if there are enough participants. If you child(ren) may be interested in attending, please email Li Gao, Program Officer, International Languages (Elementary), at li.gao@tdsb.on.ca with your child(ren)’s name, current grade, date of birth, contact information, and email. Once 23 students have indicated interest, the Spanish class will be able to open at Roden and parents will be informed of the day and time.

Coffee Social

You asked, we answered! On Friday, October 28, from 8:45 to 9:30 we will be hosting our second coffee social of the school year. Once again, coffee has been generously donated by The Black Pony Cafe and Snack Bar (located on Gerrard St, just down the street from the school). Bring your own mug! (A few paper cups will be on hand for those who cannot.)

We will be set up on the grassy knoll, just outside the kindie-area fence off Hiawatha. This will be a great opportunity to pop into the school library and pick up a few books in support of our Book Fair!

We hope to see you there.

Book Fair

We’re so excited to be hosting our Fall 2022 book fair from October 25 to 28, in partnership with a local favourite Ella Minnow Children’s Bookstore!

There will be a wide selection of books to appeal to all ages and reading interests. Students will have a chance to preview the books early in the week, and grade 4 to 8 students will be able to make a wish list they can share with their families. Sales will be happening each day from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.  Parents and students are welcome to shop the book fair between 3 to 4 p.m., as well as on Friday during the Coffee Social from 8:30-10 a.m. Cash and credit cards will be accepted.

If you’re unable to attend the book fair in-person, you can also visit Ella Minnow or purchase books online (www.ellaminnow.ca) until Sunday, October 30. Just let them know you’re a Roden/Equniox family so we get credit for your purchase.

All book fair purchases will support our school library and literacy initiatives. Thank you for your support!

Municipal Elections: Monday, October 24

In only three days, a municipal election is being held. On Monday, October 24, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., we will have the opportunity to vote for mayor, city councillor, and school board trustee.

Before October 24, you can use the MyVote Web Application to access information about who is eligible to vote, where to vote, and who is running in your ward. It’s important to make an informed decision on who to vote for. For fact-checked information about every Toronto election candidate for all of these positions, and to learn about where they stand on various issues, please visit https://thelocal.to/candidate-tracker/.

Roden Public School will be hosting a polling station in the library on Monday, October 24. Please check your voting card OR MyVote to confirm your local voting station based on your residential address.

Vote Compass (https://votecompass.thestar.com/toronto2022) is a tool with data compiled by political data scientists at McMaster University. It can help you decide which candidates best align with your values.

Voting is an important civic duty and a vital part of a healthy democracy. We encourage everyone to exercise this privilege and get out there on Monday.

Roden/Equinox Clothing Exchange

The CLOTHING SWAP is back, just in time for winter!

Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 3, 2:30-4:30, in the school gym.

Donations can be dropped off anytime at the Hiawatha, Ashdale, and Fairford doors from now until November 3. Gently used clothing (of all sizes) footwear, accessories, books, and toys are welcome! (Please mark bags with size to help us sort!)

All items remaining after the swap will help stock our own Clothing Bank at the school and will be donated to the GLOW program at New Circles.

This event is FREE and all are welcome to come find some gems and help us keep quality used stuff recirculating in our community rather than going into landfill.

To volunteer, email andrea.j.schneider@gmail.com.
